Infiniti Q50 Warning Lights and Dashboard Symbols Explained

The dashboard of an Infiniti Q50 contains warning lights, status indicators and information messages. Some lights confirm that a feature is operating, while others identify a fault that can affect safety or damage the vehicle. The meaning can also depend on whether the light appears during startup, stays on after the engine starts or begins flashing while driving.

Always compare the symbol with the owner’s manual for the exact model year. Equipment changed during the Q50’s production run, and not every vehicle has the same driver-assistance or steering systems. The guide below explains the most important lights and the safest next step.

What the Colors Generally Mean

Red warning lights normally require immediate attention. They may involve the brake system, charging system, engine-oil pressure, overheating or occupant safety. Amber or yellow lights usually indicate that a system needs inspection soon, although the vehicle may still be drivable depending on the symptoms. Green, blue and white indicators generally show that a feature is active.

Color alone is not enough. A flashing amber malfunction indicator light can be more urgent than a steady red reminder light for an unfastened seat belt. Read any accompanying message in the vehicle information display.

Brake Warning Light

The brake warning light can indicate that the parking brake is applied, the brake-fluid level is low or the hydraulic brake system has a problem. First confirm that the parking brake is fully released. If the light remains on, the brake pedal feels soft or stopping distance has increased, do not continue driving normally.

When the brake warning and ABS warning appear together, the anti-lock function may be unavailable and the basic brake system may also require attention. Stop in a safe location and arrange an inspection or tow when braking performance is uncertain.

ABS Warning Light

The ABS light normally illuminates briefly during the startup check and then turns off. If it stays on while the engine is running, the anti-lock braking system may not be functioning. Conventional braking may remain, but wheel-lock prevention during hard braking can be lost.

Possible causes include a wheel-speed sensor, wiring, tone ring, low system voltage or an ABS control fault. Because stability-control and driver-assistance systems use wheel-speed data, additional warning lights may appear at the same time.

Malfunction Indicator Light or Check-Engine Light

A steady malfunction indicator light means the engine or emissions-control system has stored a fault. The vehicle may drive normally, but the code should be scanned before it is erased. A loose or damaged fuel cap can cause an emissions code on some vehicles, but it is only one possibility.

A flashing check-engine light usually indicates a severe misfire that can damage the catalytic converters. Reduce speed, avoid heavy acceleration and have the vehicle inspected promptly. On certain 2016-2018 3.0t Q50s, Infiniti’s turbocharger warranty-extension information identifies an illuminated MIL along with excessive exhaust smoke as a possible symptom of an internal turbo oil leak.

Oil-Pressure Warning Light

The oil-can symbol is an engine-oil-pressure warning, not merely a reminder that an oil change is due. If it illuminates while driving, safely shut off the engine as soon as possible. Check the oil level only after the vehicle is parked safely and the engine has been allowed to sit according to the manual.

A correct oil level does not prove that oil pressure is adequate. A failed sensor, wiring problem, restricted pickup, internal leak, worn engine component or oil-pump problem can all be involved. Continued operation with genuinely low oil pressure can cause major engine damage.

Charge Warning Light

The battery-shaped charge warning light indicates a charging-system problem while the engine is running. The battery may not be receiving power from the alternator. A broken or displaced accessory belt can also trigger the warning and may affect other engine accessories.

Turn off unnecessary electrical loads and move to a safe location. The engine may stop once battery voltage falls too low. Inspecting the belt is useful only when it can be done safely with the engine off.

Power-Steering Warning Light

A power-steering warning may be accompanied by heavier steering effort. Depending on the Q50’s steering configuration, the cause may involve electrical power, steering control, Direct Adaptive Steering, conventional steering components or another system such as Vehicle Dynamic Control.

If the steering suddenly feels abnormal, slow down and stop safely. A restart may clear a temporary electronic condition, but a recurring warning needs diagnosis. Check battery and charging voltage because unstable power can produce multiple system warnings.

VDC, Slip and Driver-Assistance Warnings

The Vehicle Dynamic Control or slip indicator may flash when the system is actively reducing wheelspin. A steady VDC warning can indicate a malfunction or that the system has been switched off. Tire-size mismatches, wheel-speed sensor faults, alignment issues and low voltage can affect stability-control operation.

Forward Emergency Braking, Predictive Forward Collision Warning, lane-control and other assistance systems may temporarily disable when cameras or radar sensors are obstructed by dirt, heavy rain, snow or a damaged bumper. Clean only as directed by the manual. A warning that remains in clear conditions should be inspected.

Low Tire-Pressure Warning

The tire-pressure warning normally means one or more tires are below the recommended cold pressure. Check every tire with an accurate gauge and use the door-jamb label, not the number molded into the tire sidewall. A flashing light followed by steady illumination can indicate a TPMS malfunction rather than low pressure alone.

After changing wheels or sensors, the system may require correct sensor registration. AWD vehicles should use properly matched tires to avoid driveline stress.

Master Warning Light

The triangular master warning light tells the driver to read the message in the information display. It may accompany low fuel, an open door, an Intelligent Key warning, low washer fluid or a more serious system message. The triangle by itself does not identify the problem.

Read the full message before dismissing it. Some warnings disappear when the condition is corrected, while others remain stored for diagnosis.

What to Do When Several Lights Appear

Multiple warning lights appearing at once can be caused by one shared problem. Low battery voltage, a failing alternator, a disconnected wheel-speed sensor or a communication fault can trigger warnings in several modules. Do not replace each part named by each light without scanning all modules and checking the basics.

Photograph the dashboard, note the driving conditions and avoid clearing codes. If a red safety warning, overheating, smoke, severe vibration or major loss of power is present, stop driving and arrange professional assistance.
