The dual-screen Infiniti InTouch system is a defining feature of the Q50, but it can become frustrating when a screen freezes, turns black or reboots repeatedly. The correct repair depends on which screen fails, whether audio still works, whether the backup camera appears and whether the problem began after a weak battery, software update or aftermarket installation.
Before replacing a display, identify the exact symptom. A temporary software lockup can look similar to a failed screen, while low system voltage can cause several electronic modules to restart at once.
Start With the Basic System Restart
For applicable 2018 InTouch systems, Infiniti’s manual states that if the system temporarily does not respond to commands, it can be reset by holding the audio power knob for at least five seconds. The system turns off and restarts. Bluetooth audio or an app may need to reconnect afterward.
This restart is appropriate for a temporary freeze. It is not a permanent repair for a screen that repeatedly goes black, has lines through the image, loses touch response or fails whenever the vehicle hits a bump. If the fault returns, record what happened and continue diagnosis.
Check the Battery and Charging System
A Q50 contains numerous electronic control modules, and low voltage can produce unexpected behavior. A weak battery may still start the engine while causing InTouch reboots, key-fob warnings or driver-assistance messages. Test the battery under load, inspect the terminals and confirm charging voltage.
If the problem began after a battery replacement or jump-start, check that connections are tight and that no fuse or fusible link was damaged. Avoid disconnecting the battery repeatedly as a troubleshooting method because it can erase useful information and create additional initialization requirements.
One Screen Black Versus Both Screens Black
When only the upper display is black, the lower screen and physical audio controls may still operate. This can point toward the upper display, its power supply, video signal or related wiring. When only the lower touchscreen fails, climate and menu control may be affected even though the upper navigation or camera display remains visible.
If both screens, audio and controls are dead, investigate shared power, fuses, connectors and the main control units. If the screens are black but the backup camera still appears, the symptom provides another useful clue. Describe these details accurately to the repair shop.
Frozen Screen or Slow Response
A slow or frozen system can be caused by a software condition, overloaded connected device, corrupted media file or failing hardware. Disconnect USB devices and remove recently paired phones to see whether behavior changes. Restart the phone and confirm that its operating system is current.
Do not use random online reset combinations that are not documented for the exact system. Some service menus are intended for diagnostics and can change settings that affect cameras, audio or vehicle configuration.
Bluetooth and Phone Connection Problems
A screen problem may actually be a phone-pairing issue. Delete unused phones from the vehicle, remove the Q50 from the phone’s Bluetooth list and pair the devices again. Confirm that calls and audio permissions are enabled. Test with another compatible phone when possible.
If Bluetooth audio disconnects after a system restart, reconnect it before concluding that the screen repair caused a new fault. The 2018 InTouch manual specifically notes that Bluetooth audio or an audio app may need to be re-established after a restart.
Software Updates and Dealer Diagnosis
Infiniti released service information and software updates for various InTouch concerns over the years. Availability depends on the model year and hardware. An Infiniti retailer or specialist with the proper diagnostic system can identify software versions, stored communication faults and module status.
Ask whether a software update applies before purchasing replacement screens. A software repair is usually less invasive than replacing the display, but it will not fix physical damage, internal display failure or a loose connector.
Fuses, Wiring and Aftermarket Accessories
A fuse should be checked only with the correct diagram for the exact vehicle. Replacing a fuse without finding why it opened may create a repeated failure. Never install a higher-rated fuse. Wiring near the center stack should be inspected when the problem began after adding a CarPlay module, remote starter, dash camera, audio equipment or replacement screen.
Aftermarket interfaces can work well, but they add connections and software between factory components. Bypass or temporarily remove the interface according to the manufacturer’s instructions to determine whether factory operation returns.
Repair, Used Parts or Replacement Screen
If a display or control unit has failed, options may include professional repair of the original unit, a verified used component, a new OEM part or an aftermarket replacement system. Used modules may require programming and may not match the vehicle’s options. A part that looks identical can have a different software or hardware configuration.
Before ordering, verify the part number, production date, navigation equipment, camera system, audio package and whether factory settings can be transferred. Ask the seller about return policies and whether programming is included.
CarPlay Upgrade Considerations
Some owners use a screen failure as an opportunity to add Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. There are interface modules that work with the factory screens and complete replacement-screen systems. Compare retained climate controls, factory camera support, steering-wheel controls, microphone quality, audio routing and update support.
A CarPlay interface will not repair every underlying factory fault. If the original control unit or display is failing, determine whether the upgrade depends on that component before purchasing it.
When to Seek Professional Help
Professional diagnosis is appropriate when both screens are dead, a fuse repeatedly opens, there is evidence of water intrusion, the backup camera fails, the unit overheats or the system reboots constantly. Stop using any accessory that produces heat, odor or electrical noise.
A careful symptom description can reduce diagnostic time. Note whether the failure occurs cold or hot, after rain, after starting the engine, while using Bluetooth or when driving over bumps. A Q50 InTouch problem is easier to solve when the technician knows exactly which functions remain available.
