<p> The ECM calculates proper ignition spark timing based in part on the Ignition Knock (Detonation) Sensor&#8217;s signal. A malfunctioning or inoperative <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Wells-SU14165-Ignition-Detonation-Sensor/dp/B00H3TV028/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;qid=1442284765&#038;ref_=sr_1_12&#038;s=automotive&#038;sr=1-12&#038;vehicle=2014-68-23459-268--1-6-7-18704-2422-1-1-3101--1-0&#038;ymm=2014%3Ainfiniti%3Aq50&#038;linkCode=ll1&#038;tag=freshcars-20&#038;linkId=c6c58b2d367cd15b42af179f7bf582c3" target="_blank">Ignition Knock (<em>Detonation</em>) Sensor</a> can allow engine knock or &#8220;<em>ping</em>&#8221; to occur for which the ECM would otherwise adjust ignition timing to eliminate. It can also cause the Check Engine Light (CEL), Service Engine Soon (SES), or Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) to illuminate and can set a trouble code (P-code) in the ECM when not functioning correctly. </p>
<p>Not correcting a failed <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Wells-SU14165-Ignition-Detonation-Sensor/dp/B00H3TV028/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;qid=1442284765&#038;ref_=sr_1_12&#038;s=automotive&#038;sr=1-12&#038;vehicle=2014-68-23459-268--1-6-7-18704-2422-1-1-3101--1-0&#038;ymm=2014%3Ainfiniti%3Aq50&#038;linkCode=ll1&#038;tag=freshcars-20&#038;linkId=c6c58b2d367cd15b42af179f7bf582c3" target="_blank">Ignition Knock (Detonation) Sensor</a> condition can cause reduced fuel mileage and performance under load, increased emissions, and damage to other components. Prolonged engine knock can cause internal engine damage from the piston skirt &#8220;<em>slapping</em>&#8221; against the cylinder wall. </p>
